This iconic airplane of Iceland has been standing in this cold, dark sand desert since 1973, and apparently there are no plans to remove it. The airplane itself is a Douglas C-117, a military version of a DC-3. Story says that the pilots mistakenly thought the airplane had run out of fuel and were forced to do a crash landing. The story diverges at this point, with some saying that, after realising their mistake and fearing the repercussions it could have in their careers, the pilots offered the local farmers to take the remaining fuel out of the airplane, thereby covering their error and providing the lucky farmers with tractor fuel for over a year.
Independently of its dubious past, the future of the airplane seems to be certain: being a known attraction in Iceland, there are no plans to remove it form these dark sands in the near future.
